  • Loss of appetite and metallic taste in mouth
Common Symptoms
  • Oliguria (markedly reduced urine output)
  • Severe fluid overload with bilateral leg swelling and puffiness around eyes
  • Uremic pruritus (intense itching)
  • Refractory hypertension
Emergency Symptoms
  • Severe uremic pericarditis
  • Hyperkalemia (Serum Potassium > 6.5 mmol/L)

Causes & Risk Factors

Primary Causes & Etiology

  • Diabetic Nephropathy (Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes)
  • Hypertensive Nephrosclerosis
  • Chronic Glomerulonephritis & IgA Nephropathy
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD)

Who is at Higher Risk?

  • Patients with eGFR < 15 ml/min/1.73m2 (Stage 5 ESRD)
  • Long-term hemodialysis / peritoneal dialysis patients

Diagnostic Evaluation & Testing

Diagnostic Test Clinical Purpose / What It Shows
High-Resolution HLA Tissue Typing & Donor Specific Antibody (DSA) Crossmatch Confirms 6-antigen HLA matching and absence of pre-formed donor antibodies
Renal CTA & DTPA / MAG3 Nuclear Scan Evaluates donor renal vascular anatomy and differential split function

Comprehensive Treatment Options

Living Related Donor Renal Allotransplantation

Implantation of healthy donor kidney into extraperitoneal right iliac fossa with vascular and ureteroneocystostomy anastomoses.

Key Advantages:
Immediate graft function on operating table
Superior 10-year graft survival (> 85%)
Complete elimination of hemodialysis

Deceased Donor (Cadaveric) Renal Transplantation

Transplantation of deceased donor kidney from national organ sharing registry.

Recommended For:
Patients without eligible living family donors

Advanced Medical Technologies Available in Partner Hospitals

Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy Lich-Gregoir Ureteral Reconstitution Tacrolimus Trough Level Monitoring

Possible Complications If Untreated

Acute T-cell or antibody-mediated rejection
Delayed Graft Function (DGF)
BK Virus Nephropathy
CMV infection

Recovery Timeline, Diet & Lifestyle Care

Recovery Timeline

Procedure / Stage Expected Recovery Duration
Surgical Ward Monitoring 5 to 7 days

Return to Normal Active Living 4 to 6 weeks

Recommended Post-Treatment Diet

  • High fluid intake (2.5 - 3L/day)
  • Low sodium diet
  • Hygiene cooked food diet

Essential Lifestyle Changes

  • Daily urine output, weight, and blood pressure logging
  • Take Tacrolimus at exact 12-hour times
  • Avoid contact sports
When to Contact a Doctor Urgently:
